WHAT IS REIKI?

Reiki (pronounced Ray Key) is a Japanese word meaning Universal Life Energy. “Rei” means universal, all around us, and “Ki” is the Life Force, the non-physical vitality that gives life to all living things.

Reiki is an ancient healing used thousands of years ago in Tibet, China and India Dr. Mikao Usui rediscovered it over a hundred years ago and this skill has been passed on to students down the years.

Reiki reinforces the body’s natural ability to heal itself and can support and enhance all other forms of treatment Reiki works holistically to balance the whole person and brings about a deep sense of relaxation and wellbeing This is because it works on the different levels of self – physical, mental and emotional.

Reiki is a non-invasive therapy whose aim is to treat holistically and to restore homeostasis It is ideal for anyone of any age, going through a difficult time – be that physically or emotionally. Reiki is growing in popularity and is now being used in various locations including GP surgeries, hospitals, hospices, drug rehabilitation, HIV centres and in the care of the elderly.

SAFETY

Reiki is a gentle yet powerful complementary therapy and may be used with confidence alongside orthodox healthcare As such, it expands treatment options.

There is no belief system attached to this therapy and there is no conflict with any religious beliefs. Reiki is not, however, an alternative to conventional medicine. You should always consult a GP about acute or infectious conditions and in connection with medical problems of an urgent nature.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A SESSION?

Reiki is non invasive, non-manipulative and is not designed to diagnose, nor offer a cure. The session is usually carried out with the recipient lying down in a comfortable and peaceful environment. There is no need to remove any clothing as Reiki energy passes through all materials, including plaster casts.

The practitioner places their hands gently on or over the body. The recipient automatically draws in as much energy as is needed and the energy is used by the body in the most appropriate way at that time. This flow of energy may be felt as warmth, coolness, tingling or just deep relaxation.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

Illness or emotional upset can be a time of great stress. Reiki can help us to cope by encouraging relaxation and bringing balance to both mind and emotions.

Reiki is deeply relaxing and has a profoundly calming effect. It promotes a sense of well-being on all levels. It can enhance everyday living, and regular sessions may help to promote development of a healthier, more resourceful state of being.

It encourages and supports positive personal choices such as improving diet, taking more exercise, devoting time for rest or leisure and may reduce the need for alcohol and tobacco.

It is a good idea to rest for a while after your treatment and drink more water over the following 48 hours. Be responsive to your body’s needs e.g. resting if tired, and allowing the energy to continue its work in the days following the session. The beneficial effects may be felt for several days.
