WHAT IS REFLEXOLOGY?

Reflexology is a popular and relaxing complementary therapy based on the principle that reflex points on the feet correspond to areas throughout the body. Working these reflexes, using a specialised massage technique, can correct imbalances, release blocked energy and encourage improved health, both physical and emotional.

The Chinese are said to have used an early form of reflexology more than 5000 years ago and Egyptian tomb artwork dating from around 2000 BC also shows foot massage. These ancient forms of massage were based on the principle that energy zones run throughout the body.

This principle – which became known as zone therapy – was further developed in the early 19th Century with the discovery that applying pressure to the zones of the feet could ease underlying problems. These ideas were expanded by therapists throughout the early 20th century and reflexology as we know it today was introduced to Britain in the early 1960s. It is one of the fastest growing complementary therapies, it is non-invasive, gentle and deeply relaxing.

Reflexology is suitable for people of all ages and there are only a very few conditions where caution is exercised. You can be confident that Fiona will ensure Reflexology is right for you and tailored specifically to your individual needs. In rare circumstances she may wish to obtain your doctor’s permission prior to the commencement of treatments.

A Reflexology session lasts between 1 hour and 1 hour, 20 minutes. You will remain fully clothed, simply removing shoes and socks, and will receive your therapy reclining on a comfortable bed. Fiona likes to offer her clients a soothing, warm footspa just to ensure her clients shut off the cares of everyday life and kick-start the relaxation process. The peaceful room and calming music will enhance the relaxation process.

Reflexology can also be carried out on the hands and Fiona finds this an effective method of giving her clients “homework” and continue the healing process until the next session.

In order to get the best from reflexology, Fiona will advise you to follow a few simple suggestions for the 24 hours prior and following your session. These will help your body’s natural healing process and eliminate any toxins may have brought to the surface:

  • Try to drink a little more water (we should all be drinking 1 to 1.5 litres of still water per day)
  • Try to cut down on caffeine in tea, coffee and fizzy drinks.
  • Try to avoid alcohol
  • Try to eat a light diet
Try to rest and relax as much as possible.
